Benchmarks ended lacklustre session on a flat note due to lack of buying activity at current levels. Gains in banks and realty were offset by losses in power and capital goods space.
Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 18,048.85, down 1.93 points or 0.01 per cent. The index touched a high of 18140.15 and low of 18026 in today’s trade.
National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 5414.15, down 4.15 points or 0.08 per cent. The index touched intraday high of 5443.55 and low of 5410.10.
Nifty has been trading in a narrow range of 5350-5490 for the past 5 weeks. Technically, the short term momentum indicator suggests support on the every fall. However a breakdown below 5350 would result in Nifty entering the long term channel with width of 4800 – 5400. On the upper end, breach above 5520 would result in a new bull market.
BSE Midcap Index was up 0.60 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.34 per cent higher.
Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Bankex was up 0.95 per cent and BSE Realty Index gained 0.23 per cent. BSE IT Index declined 0.33 per cent and BSE Capital Goods Index slipped 0.29 per cent.
Hindalco Industries (2.34%), HDFC Bank (1.86%), Reliance Communications (1.50%), HDFC (1.26%), and ITC (0.85%) were amongst the top Sensex gainers.
Hindustan Unilever (-1.59%), Reliance Infrastructure (-1.12%), Sterlite Industries (-0.97%), ONGC (-0.87%) and Tata Steel (-0.74%) were amongst the top losers.
Market breadth turned negative on the BSE with 701 losers against 626 gainers.
Meanwhile, the European markets moved higher and the US was headed for a strong open. At 4:20 pm IST, Dow Jones futures was up 0.64 per cent, S&P 500 gained 0.78 per cent and Nasdaq moved 0.67 per cent.
