WORLD MARKETS UPDATE 30.04.2010

Asian markets trading higher on Friday.
Nikkei Stock Average 225 up 1.35 pct at 11,072.26 .
Hang Seng Index up 1.24 pct at 21,036.45.
KOSPI Index up 0.75 at 1,741.44.
Shanghai Composite Index down 0.47 pct at 2,855.06.
US Markets
US Markets ended higher on Thursday. Dow Jones industrial average was up 122 points,up 1.11 percent, to 11,167. The Standard & Poor's 500 index ended up at 1,207 . The tech-heavy NASDAQ composite index ended up to settle 2,512.

European Stocks Ended Higher
European Markets ended Higher on Thursday. Britain’s FTSE 100 index ended up 0.56 percent up 31 points to 5,618 ,Germany's DAX ended up 1.00 pct 61 points at 6,145,France's CAC 40 ended up at 3,841.
Commodities
Crude oil was up 27 cents to trade at $85.44 a barrel. Gold settle at $1,174 an ounce.

After nosediving nearly 2 per cent in the previous session, equity benchmarks were back in action Thursday as traders covered short positions with the expiry of derivative contracts for the April series. Realty, banking and metal counters were in demand while FMCG, healthcare and technology counters ended with minor losses.

The overall market sentiment turned better backed by overnight gains on Wall Street, after the US Federal Reserve offered reassurances about the world's largest economy. The central bank, at the end of a two-day policy meeting, said the labor market is beginning to improve and it noted that housing starts have edged up. It expects to keep rates low for an extended period to help strengthen the economy.

Overall, there was considerable amount of strength in the market. 5200 on the Nifty was held comfortably which was under threat after the massive fall Wednesday. Banking counters picked up significant gains. The sentiment which was battered on account of the global woes has now improved. Going forward, Nifty will remain in a range of 5200-5300 and one needs to wait for a breakout in either directions to determine the trend. In case it breaks 5200 on the downside, then the index may slip to 5125, while on the upside, if 5300 breaks, the Nifty can rally upto 5400

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 5254.15, higher by 38.70 points or 0.74 per cent. The broader index hit a high of 5264.75 and low of 5214.80.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex was at 17,503.47, up 123.39 points or 0.71 per cent. The index touched a high of 17532.86 and low of 17382.09.

The broader market also gained momentum. BSE Midcap Index was up 1.08 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index gained 1.29 per cent.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index was up 1.96 per cent, BSE Bankex gained 1.62 per cent and BSE Metal moved 1.14 per cent higher. BSE FMCG Index declined 0.96 per cent, BSE Healthcare Index fell 0.34 per cent and BSE IT Index lost 0.25 per cent.

On a stock specific note, shares of Mindtree Consulting dropped more than 10 per cent to Rs 575 after HSBC, JPMorgan and Credit Suisse downgraded the stock.

Meanwhile, shares of Eicher Motors surged more than 16 per cent after the commercial vehicles manufacturer’s net profit in the March quarter more than doubled. The company reported an over twofold jump in its net profit for the first quarter ending March 2010, at Rs 40.21 crore on account of higher sales and cost efficiency measures. The company had recorded a profit of Rs 15.83 crore in the same period last year, Eicher said in a statement.

Biggest Nifty gainers were Unitech (4.34%), Reliance Power (4.12%), ICICI Bank (3.11%), Tata Motors (2.72%) and State Bank of India (2.37%).

Losers were Power Grid (-4.4%), BPCL (-2.86%), Idea Cellular (-2.77%) and Sun Pharmaceuticals (-2.43%).

Market breadth on BSE showed 1797 advances against 1056 declines.

Equities ended in the negative territory Wednesday mirroring losses in other global markets after the Standard & Poor’s downgraded Greece’s rating to junk and lowered Portugal by two notches. The fall was led by index heavy-weight Reliance Industries and other frontline metal stocks.

Indices opened in the red and drifted lower on uncertainties in the global markets. However, the selling pressure intensified following negative opening of the European markets. Benchmarks fell to psychological support levels and recovered marginally towards the end of session.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 17,380.08, down 310.54 points or 1.76 per cent. The index touched intraday low of 17344.58 and high of 17643.59.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 5215.45, down 92.90 points or 1.75 per cent. The index touched a low of 5202.45 and high of 5308.25 in today’s trade.

BSE Midcap Index was down 1.6 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 2.05 per cent lower.

All the sectoral indices ended in the red. BSE Realty Index fell 3.61 per cent, BSE Oil&gas Index declined 2.72 per cent and BSE Metal Index was down 2.21 per cent.

Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries tanked after the Citigroup downgraded the stock to ‘Hold’ after disappointing results. Most analysts are of the view that RIL may trade sideways near term whereas long term is still positive.

In addition to that, according to media reports, the Supreme Court verdict on RIL-RNRL gas dispute may be out in a week’s time. The Bombay High Court has already ruled out the verdict in the favour of Anil-Ambani owned RNRL.

SAIL (-4.57%), Jaiprakash Associates (-4.42%), RIL (-4.02%), Unitech (-3.86%) and Tata Steel (-3.58%) led the Nifty decline.

Reliance Industries has closed below its 200 DMA after a long time. We are expecting further correction in the stock and it may fall to Rs 950 levels.

Sun Pharmaceuticals (1.08%), ABB (1.06%), State Bank of India (0.91%), ACC (0.85%) and IDFC (0.76%) were the index gainers.

Market breadth was negative on the BSE with 2176 declines against 720 advances.

European markets were reeling under pressure while the US stock futures suggested a positive start after the sell-off. At 4:45 pm IST, Dow Jones futures was up 0.11 per cent, S&P 500 advanced 0.14 per cent and Nasdaq 100 gained 0.19 per cent.

Asian Markets
Asian markets trading lower on Wednesday on Greece downgrade.
Nikkei Stock Average 225 down 2.47 pct at 10,935.99.
Hang Seng Index down 1.52 pct at 20,938.16.
KOSPI Index down 1.28 pct at 1,727.22.
Shanghai Composite Index down 0.23 pct at 2,901.32.
US Markets
US Markets ended lower on Tuesday.Dow Jones industrial average was down 213 points,down 1.90 percent, to 10,992. The Standard & Poor's 500 index ended lower at 1,184 . The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index ended down to settle 2,471 .

European Stocks Ended Lower
European Markets ended lower on Tuesday on Greek woes .Britain's FTSE 100 index ended down 2.61 percent down 150 points to 5,604,Germany's DAX ended lower up 2.73 pct 173 points at 6,160,France's CAC 40 ended lower at 3,845 .
Commodities
Crude oil was down 13 cents to trade at $82.32 a barrel.Gold settle at $1,166 an ounce.
