Equity benchmarks ended a volatile session in the positive terrain on Thursday, but after paring most of intra-day gains. Oil&gas and auto stocks were amongst the top performing sectors while realty and metals resisted the upmove.

Indices turned rangebound after a positive opening. Later, buying by institutions in frontline stocks like State Bank of India and Reliance Industries spurred the benchmarks. However, the broader markets which have been outperforming the benchmarks failed to sustain the upmove.

The indices failed to sustain higher levels and gave away gains in last half-hour of trade following weakness in the European market. Tier II and III stocks also ended on a subdued note.

Market is looking weak and the Nifty can slide to 5050 levels on the downside. We have advised short positions from 5350 levels with stoploss of 5400. Amongst the sectors, metals and banks look weak while FMCG and hotels look good. One can also buy real estate stocks on decline
