Indian markets ended lacklustre session on a mixed note on Tuesday as traders turned cautious near crucial resistance levels. Auto and IT stocks led the decline while realty and power stocks ended in the green.
Indices opened in the green but ran out of steam following two-day upmove and turned choppy. Mixed Asian markets also failed to trigger it in any direction.
Experts are of the view that traders may get lured into the market as the euphoria of bull-run continues and get trapped at higher levels.
The operators are likely to push the Sensex above 18000 levels. This will trigger short-coverings and the market will move up another 300-400 points. One should be cautious as these levels could be a trap and market may witness a sharp sell-off
Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 17,941.37, up 5.69 points or 0.03 per cent. The index touched a high of 17,991.41 and low of 17,898 intra-day.
National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 5366, down 0.04 per cent or 2.4 points. The index moved in a range of 5388.65 and 5351.70.
The broader market fared better than the benchmarks. BSE Midcap Index finished 0.68 per cent higher and BSE Smallcap Index rose 0.52 per cent.
Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index closed 1.4 per cent higher, BSE Power Index ended 0.72 per cent up and BSE FMCG Index advanced 0.57 per cent
. BSE Auto Index slipped 1.02 per cent and BSE IT index declined 0.95 per cent.
Nifty gainers comprised Reliance Power (3.53%), Reliance Communications (2.66%), Suzlon Energy (2.52%), BHEL (2.31%) and DLF (2.11%).
Losers were HCL Technologies (-3.82%), Cipla (-3.31%), Mahindra & Mahindra (-2.82%), JP Associates (-1.68%) and Ambuja Cements (-1.64%).
Market breadth on BSE showed 1750 advances against 1167 declines.
European markets, which opened after a long holiday, were trading about half a percent higher while US stock indices futures were marginally in the red. At 5 pm IST, Dow Jones stock futures was down 0.14 per cent, S&P 500 futures slipped 0.22 per cent and Nasdaq 100 declined 0.20 per cent
