Benchmarks ended in the negative territory on Thursday as traders booked profits after fears of Greece debt crisis hurt sentiments. Oil & gas, metals and PSU stocks were the worst hit while realty and IT stocks showed some strength.

Indices opened on a flat note and turned choppy due to lack of cues from Asian peers. The broader markets meanwhile continued with upward movement. However profit booking intensified with the opening of European markets and benchmarks slipped below psychological support levels.

Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex ended at 17,714.40, lower by 255.62 points or 1.42 per cent from the previous close. The index touched a high of 17,960.91 and low of 17,679.34 intra-day.

National Stock Exchange's Nifty closed at 5304.45, down 1.31 per cent or 70.20 points. The index slipped to a low of 5290.25 from a high of 5383.65.

Such corrections are healthy for the markets. We may see the Nifty consolidate in the range of 5200-5350 for next two weeks. Medium term trend is positive and we may see levels of 5500-5700 in next quarter

BSE Midcap Index ended 0.40 per cent lower and BSE Smallcap Index closed 0.38 per cent lower.

Market breadth on BSE was negative with 1688 declines against 1188 advances.
