Indian stock markets ended a sluggish session on a lower note Tuesday, as traders squared off positions ahead of April F&O series expiry. Negative cues from the global markets also dampened sentiments.
Compared to the March series, the open interest and volumes have gone down slightly whereas Nifty has moved up around 1 per cent. We are likely to see unwinding of long positions in coming days
Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 17,690.62, down 54.66 points or 0.31 per cent. The index touched a high of 17769.25 and low of 17678.56 in the day’s trade.
National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 5308.35, down 14.1 points or 0.26 per cent. The broader index touched intra-day high of 5330.55 and low of 5301.40.
Nifty is likely to be volatile and close around 5300 levels. For the May series we see the Nifty in the range of 5100-5300BSE Midcap Index was down 0.31 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.01 per cent lower.
Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index was down 1.44 per cent, BSE Bankex slipped 0.85 per cent and BSE Auto Index slipped 0.81 per cent. BSE FMCG Index gained 0.57 per cent and BSE Healthcare Index advanced 0.3 per cent.
Biggest Sensex gainers were ONGC (2.86%), Reliance Infrastructure (1.74%), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.64%), ITC (1.2%) and HDFC (1%).
Losers were Maruti Suzuki (-3.88%), Jaiprakash Associates (-3.74%),

DLF (-1.81%), State Bank of India (-1.6%) and Sterlite Industries (-1.57%).
Market breadth on BSE showed 1608 declines against 1288 advances.
The European markets were in the red as traders booked profits in financial institutions. US stocks futures were also in the red ahead of FOMC meet. At 5:10 pm IST, Dow Jones futures was down 0.23 per cent, S&P 500 futures declined 0.43 per cent and Nasdaq 100 declined 0.31 per cent.
