Indian equities ended a choppy session on a positive note on Wednesday, after buying in technology stocks pushed the benchmarks to 30-month highs. The indices got support from capital goods and power stocks while oil & gas and metal stocks witnessed profit booking.
According to analysts, institutional funds bought IT shares aggressively towards the end of the session after better-than-expected results from Cognizant.
The company has raised CY10 revenue growth guidance by at 'at least 36%' versus ‘at least 25%’. This showcases positive outlook for Indian IT giants like Infosys, Wipro and TCS.
National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 5467.85, up 28.3 points or 0.52 per cent. The 50-share index touched a high of 5481.90 and low of 5428.40 in today’s trade.
Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 18,217.44, higher by 102.61 points or 0.57 per cent. The index touched intraday high of 18,249.46 and low of 18,093.03.
The BSE Midcap Index was up 0.03 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved higher by 0.53 per cent.
Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE IT Index rallied 3.26 per cent and BSE Capital Goods Index gained 1.14 per cent. BSE Oil&gas Index moved 0.77 per cent lower and BSE Metal Index declined 0.34 per cent.
TCS (4.43%), Wipro (3.96%), Infosys Technologies (2.99%), BHEL (2.17%) and Reliance Infrastructure (1.77%) were the top Sensex gainers.
Losers included Bharti Airtel (-1.67%), ACC (-1.19%), Tata Steel (-1.06%), RIL (-1%) and Jaiprakash Associates (-0.84%).
Market breadth was positive on the BSE with 1691 advances against 1500 declines.
