Benchmarks ended choppy session on a positive note after a bout of short-covering in the last half an hour of trade. Banks, metals and IT stocks showed strength while FMCG and PSU space witnessed some profit booking.

Market opened higher but soon lost momentum due to lack of supportive cues from global markets. Bulls also took a breather after two day rally With most events of FY10 behind us, the market would be looking for earnings from various corporations. Recently, analysts have upgraded earnings for their sectors, which is a positive indicator of continued positive sentiments. Despite challenges on the inflation front, and, hence the rising interest rate, corporate sentiments continue to remain positive with an outlook on job creation and salary hikes that is equally encouraging. However, risks associated with higher valuations, lower-than-expected earnings and slowing foreign fund inflows remain

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 5245.90, up 14 points or 0.36 per cent. The index touched a high of 5255.65 and low of 5214.40.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 17519.26, up 29.18 points or 0.17 per cent. The 30-share index hit a high of 17548.13 and low of 17417.61

BSE Midcap Index was up 0.37 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved up 0.06 per cent.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Bankex gained 0.61 per cent, BSE Metal Index advanced 0.49 per cent and BSE IT Index moved 0.43 per cent higher. BSE FMCG Index slipped 0.55 per cent and BSE Capital Goods Index declined 0.28 per cent.

Nifty gainers were IDEA (3.26%) Jaiprakash Associates (2.02%), SAIL (1.92%), Axis Bank (1.81%) and Infosys Technologies (1.05%).

Losers comprised Mahindra & Mahindra (-3.51%), BPCL (-2.59%), Tata Consultancy Services (-2.09%), Wipro (-1.52%), and ONGC (-1.50%).

Market breadth on BSE showed 1260 advances against 1566 declines.

The European markets were in the red following profit booking in banks and the US stock futures were indicating a mixed opening. At 5 pm, Dow Jones stock futures was up 0.02 per cent, S&P 500 was down 0.10 per cent and Nasdaq slipped 0.05 per cent lower.
