Equities ended a lacklustre session on a flat note Friday, due to lack of triggers from global markets and as in-line January IIP failed to lift sentiments.Index of Industrial Production for the month of January grew at 16.7% versus 17.6% a month ago. Manufacturing output was up 17.9%. April-Jan IIP showed growth at 9.6% (YoY).

India’s industrial activity has witnessed a sharp V-shaped recovery, as the sector recorded another astounding performance in January. Industrial production grew by 16.7% in January after an upwardly revised growth of 17.6% in December, the fourth consecutive month of double digit growth.

As per our estimates, the overall IIP could continue to be in a range of 15% plus zone for the rest of this FY and almost till May/June 2010. After this, we expect IIP growth to fall off to around 10-12% in the six months hence (till around Nov/Dec). This slowdown will also probably be on account of the RBI increasing the policy interest rateMarket has run out of steam after a post budget rally and is moving in a narrow range due to lack of triggers. It is now expected to take cues from global peers and Reserve Bank of India’s take on interest rates.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 17,166.62, down 1.34 points or 0.01 per cent. The 30-share index hit a low of 17126.93 and high of 17244.54.

BSE Midcap Index was down 0.23 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.45 per cent lower.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Metal Index was up 0.63 per cent and BSE Oil&gas Index edged 0.41 per cent higher. BSE Realty Index slipped 0.83 per cent and BSE Capital Goods Index declined 0.62 per cent.
