Shares nudged higher for a second day on Thursday as strong US manufacturing data eased some concerns about the pace of global economic recovery, but investor confidence was brittle. Financials topped the gainers on hopes an expanding economy will boost demand for loans, and help boost earnings. Auto makers and cement producers that saw higher August sales also climbed.
The 30-share BSE index ended up 0.18 percent, or 32.44 points, at 18,238.31, with 18 components advancing. Trading was choppy, with an early rise of 0.8 percent triggering profit-taking and sending the index briefly into negative territory.

Nifty closed at provisional 5486.15, gaining just 14.30 points. The National Stock Exchange benchmark had touched a high of 5513.95 earlier in the day, while the low was 5471.85.
Shares of Suzlon Energy on Thursday zoomed over 10 per cent on BSE, amid media reports that Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Industries may acquire stake in the wind power major.
Suzlon Energy, which
was trading in a narrow range during most part of the session, soared 14 per cent in the final hour of the day to hit a high of Rs 53.10 after reports of stake buy by RIL flashed.
The scrip ended the day with a gain of 10.19 per cent at Rs 51.35 on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Accordin
g to reports, the country's most valued corporate entity Reliance Industries is looking to pick up stake in the Tulsi Tanti-led wind energy major.
The market has outperformed emerging market peers such as Brazil's Bovespa, Russia's RTS index and China's Shanghai Composite Index.

Top Sensex gainers were Jaiprakash Associates (4.05%), Sterlite Industries (2.56%), HDFC (1.53%), Tata Power (1.41%), HDFC Bank (1.27%), ITC (1.20%), ICICI Bank (0.95%), Tata Steel (0.90%), Hindustan Unilever (0.84%), Tata Motors (0.59%).

Losers included Hero Honda (-3.73%), TCS (-1.66%), BHEL (-1.16%), Infosys (-1.06%), ONGC (-1%), Hindalco (-0.98%), Reliance Infra (-0.94%), SBI (-0.89%), NTPC (-0.84%), Bharti Airtel (-0.77%), Reliance Communications (-0.67%).
