The Sensex ended in the negatitve terrain after paring intraday
gains led by losses in metals, auto, power and pharmaceutical stocks.
The BSE index ended at 16,433.70, down 45.88 points, or 0.28 percent. It touched an intraday high of 16,671.81 and a low of 16,377.02.
The Nifty closed at 4,970.50, down 4.30 points, or 0.09 percent. It touched an intraday high of 5,039.30 and a low of 4,950.30.
The BSE Midcap Index was up 0.15 percent and the BSE Smallcap Index slipped 0.21 percent.
Among sectoral indices, the BSE Metal Index was down 1.06 percent, the BSE Auto Index declined 0.79 percent and the BSE Power Index was 0.65 percent lower. The BSE Oil & Gas Index moved up 0.60 percent and the BSE IT Index gained 0.13 percent.

Among sectoral indices, the BSE Bankex was up 1.21 percent, the BSE Capital Goods Index gained 1.20 percent, the BSE Oil & Gas Index was 1.20 percent higher and the BSE Auto Index moved up 0.99 percent. The BSE IT Index was down 0.31 percent.
IDFC (4.12%), Reliance Infrastructure (2.54%), Cairn India (2.33%), Axis Bank (2.15%) and Kotak Bank (2.13%) are among the Nifty gainers.
Ranbaxy Laboratories (1.63%), Maruti Suzuki (1.45%), Infosys Technologies (0.93%), Sun Pharma (0.62%) and Punjab National Bank (0.59%) are among the top losers.
Foreign institutional investors sold shares worth Rs 376.34 crore on Wednesday, as per provisional stock exchange data.
The market breadth was positive on the NSE with 978 gainers against 367 losers
