Benchmarks ended in the negative terrain for second consecutive session due to lack of buying activity amid weak global cues. Realty, banks and healthcare sectors led the losers pack while technology space edged higher.

Investors seem to have adopted sell-on-rallies strategy due to growing global economic concerns and rate hike worries by the Reserve Bank of India, say dealers. The market may continue to slip lower towards support levels as the earnings from corporates have not been encouraging enough to boost sentiments.

Meanwhile, food inflation for the week ended July 9 eased to 7.58 per cent compared to 8.31 per cent a week ago. The primary articles index fell to 11.13 per cent compared to 11.58 per cent in previous week.

"If this declining trend continues, I do hope it will have a moderating influence on the price front," said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee
.

Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex ended at 18436.19, down 66.19 points or 0.36 per cent. The 30-share index touched intraday low of 18415.36 and high of 18566.99.

National Stock Exchange's Nifty closed at 5541.60, down 25.45 points or 0.46 per cent. The broader index touched a high of 5578.90 and low of 5532.70 in trade today.

"Nifty is trying to hold levels of 5500-5550 but looking at the selling pressure it seems difficult. If the Nifty breaks down below 5550 level decisively then 5450 and 5350 can be tested. Strength will only be seen once it manages to close above 5650," said Hitesh Seth, technical analyst, Prabhudas Lilladhar.

BSE Midcap Index was down 0.43 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.45 per cent lower.

Amongst sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index moved 1.43 per cent lower
, BSE Bankex was down 0.98 per cent and BSE Healthcare Index slipped 0.80 per cent. BSE IT Index was up 0.14 per cent.

Reliance Communications (-4.13%), Kotak Bank (-3.53%), IDFC (-2.67%), Sesa Goa (-2.61%) and Reliance Industries (-2.08%) were amongst the top Nifty losers.

Special CBI Judge O P Saini allowed the application moved by the income tax department seeking permission to quiz Raja, Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka and three Reliance ADAG top officials-- Gautam Doshi, Hari Nair and Surendra Pipara.

Hero Honda Motors reported standalone net profit of Rs 557.89 crore for the quarter ended June 2011 against Rs 491.69 crore a year ago. Net sales rose to Rs 5637.64 crore as against Rs 4264.61 crore.
