Benchmarks ended choppy session on a positive due to lack of buying conviction amongst investors in absence of any trigger to drive the market.

Losses in FMCG, realty and metals were offset by gains in capital goods, banks and pharmaceutical stocks. According to analysts, the market is likely to turn volatile ahead of May series expiry.

"May series expiry is likely to close below 5400 levels. Global cues are negative and corporate earnings also failed to lift the mood. One should wait for June series for clear direction.

Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex ended at 18011.97, up 18.64 points or 0.10. The 30-share index hit a high of 18110.39 and low of 17933.94 intraday.

National Stock Exchange's Nifty closed at 5394.85, up 8.30 points or 0.15 per cent. The broader index touched a high of 5422.60 and low of 5367.45 in trade today.

BSE Smallcap Index was down 0.04 per cent.

Amongst sectoral indices, BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1.19 per cent, BSE Bankex moved 0.57 per cent higher and BSE Oil&gas Index advanced 0.20 per cent. BSE FMCG Index was down 0.94 per cent, BSE Realty Index moved 0.58 per cent lower and BSE Metal Index declined 0.08 per cent.

Ambuja Cement (4.62%), ACC (2.87%), Punjab National Bank (2.49%), L&T (2.30%) and Sun Pharma (2.02%) were the major Nifty gainers.

DLF (-2.06%), Reliance Infrastructure (-2.02%), ITC (-1.81%), BPCL (-1.60%) and GAIL (-1.59%) were the top losers.

Market breadth was negative on the NSE with 1440 declines as compared to 1380 declines.
