New Intermediate Uptrend

Prices of stocks (and other entities) rise and fall due to changes in the supply and demand relationships between buyers and sellers of the stock. The causes of the changing supply and demand relationships are many, but the effect of these changes shows up in the changing stock prices.

The following list shows all stocks & indices beginning a new intermediate uptrend. A new intermediate uptrend normally begins with an upside breakout when demand outstrips supply after a series of falling tops and bottoms.

Indian markets pared some off the intra-day losses and ended near support levels Friday reacting to earthquake and tsunami waves in Japan, weak US economic data and protests in the middle-east.

An earthquake of magnitude 8.9, worst in 140 years, struck northern coast of Japan triggering Tsunami waves as high as 10 meters. Nuclear reactors and airports were affected as the waves damaged everything that came in their way.

According to experts, apart from sentimental knee-jerk reaction, Indian markets will not be affected by the tragedy in Japan.
Does it make any difference to Indian economy? I do not think so. Is it hitting sentiment in the market today? Absolutely, the markets moved down. But I do not think people can change their investment decisions in India because of this tragedy in Japan.

The tremors hit global markets badly which were already under pressure on economic concerns. Indian markets had opened in the red reacting to weekly jobless claims in the US which increased to 397000. Trade deficit also worsened more than expected to $46.3 billion.

Public unrest in the middle-east also kept the investors jittery. Demonstrators had planned protests in the Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh for political reforms.

There was some relief back home as January IIP data turned out to be better-than-expected. India?s Industrial Output in January grew at 3.7 per cent against 2.5 per cent in December.

With the base effect impacting the numbers, Jan industrial output remained subdued but came in higher than ours and consensus expectations (Citi 2.8%; Consensus 2.9%).

Given the continuation of the high base effect in the coming quarter (growth averaged 15%), we except the numbers to remain in low single-digits.
We thus maintain our view of the RBI hiking by an additional 50bps in 2011 with a 25bps hike likely in its review next week and a further 50bps 2012.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said he was not satisfied with the pace of expansion of India's industrial output.

National Stock Exchanges Nifty ended at 5445.45, down 48.95 points or 0.89 per cent. The broader index touched a low of 5411.55 and high of 5502.70 in today’s trade.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 18174.09, down 153.89 points or 0.84 per cent. The 30-share index touched a low of 18063.29 and high of 18368.43 intraday.

BSE Midcap Index was down 1.07 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index declined 1.12 per cent.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Metal Index fell 1.91 per cent lower, BSE IT Index slipped 1.49 per cent and BSE Power Index was down 1.49 per cent. BSE Oil&gas Index was up 0.81 per cent and BSE FMCG Index was up 0.03 per cent.

BHEL (-3.64%), Reliance Communications (-3.46%), Reliance Infrastructure (-3.19%), Sterlite Industries (-3.06%) and Jaiprakash Associates (-2.90%) were amongst the major Sensex losers.

ONGC (2.14%), Reliance Industries (0.73%), Tata Power (0.55%), HUL (0.42%) and ITC (0.15%) were the top gainers.

Market breadth was negative on the BSE with 1928 declines against 924 advances.

UPDATEDTIME 09.28 PM 10 MARCH 2011

Benchmarks ended in the negative terrain Thursday as spike in crude oil prices due to tension in Libya raised concerns of inflation and interest rate hike. While the food inflation has come down below double digit, market will be awaiting January Index of Industrial Production data for further direction.

India's food price index rose 9.52 per cent and the fuel price index climbed 9.48 per cent in the year to February 26. In the previous week, annual food and fuel inflation stood at 10.39 per cent and 12.56 per cent.

According to experts, the Indian equities look attractive at current levels and if the oil prices stabilises then the market may witness a rally.

According to most measures they are not deeply attractive, but they are certainly attractive and the froth has gone. We have had a correction - 18% or so - and in most counters, the correction has been much deeper. This was something very classical. Especially with Indian markets, every year - certainly every 18 months or so - there is a
correction of 15-25%. 2008-2009 was an exception.

So we have done that. The fundamentals are more than positive if you assume away the oil problem. I am not saying assume it away, I am just saying if the oil problem stabilises - and there are some arguments to think it will stabilise - then we have done our correction and we can look forward to a reasonable rally in the market.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 18327.98 down 141.97 points or 0.77 per cent. The 30-share index touched a low of 18261.26 and high of 18430.84 intraday.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty was at 5494.40, down 36.60 points or 0.66 per cent. The broader index touched a low of 5468.45 and high of 5516.30 in today’s trade.

This year we do not expect such a significant fall (as in 2008). This year we expect the index to only retrace until 38.2% retracement of the Bull Run, which is 4780 i.e. a 13% fall from the current level (5520). We expect the BSE Metal index to be a key driver of the coming fall,” Shroff said.

BSE Midcap Index was down 0.07 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.25 per cent lower.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Metal Index was down 1.30 per cent, BSE Bankex moved 1.16 per cent lower and BSE IT Index slipped 0.53 per cent. BSE Realty Index was up 0.67 per cent.

Reliance Capital (4.51%), ONGC (2.51%), Suzlon Energy (1.68%), DLF (1.62%) and SAIL (1.42%) were the top Nifty gainers.

Tata Power (-2.74%), Tata Steel (-2.68%), Sesa Goa (-2.30%), Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (-2.07%) and ICICI Bank (-2.05%) were amongst the major losers.

Market breadth was negative on the NSE with 1565 declines against 1280 advances.
