MARKET ENDED 25 AUGUST 2011 THURSDAY

WERE TODAY'S GAINERS

SENSEX            16146.33        -138.65
NIFTY               4839.60         -49.30
NASDAQ            2434.99         -32.70
UPDATEDTIME 09.28 PM  24 AUGUST 2011
Indian shares fell for a second straight session on Thursday as global growth slowdown fears punctured investor confidence, while weariness ahead of monthly derivative contracts expiry on a local stock exchange also dragged.

The market focus is firmly on Friday's speech by the Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke at an annual meet of policymakers and academics in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, which some investors hope will contain steps to bolster a faltering U.S. economy.

The 30-share main stock index ended down 0.85 percent, or 138.65 points at 16,146.33, with 19 components closing in the red. The benchmark index had risen as much as 0.55 percent earlier.

Analysts said volatile trade was typical ahead of the expiry of the August derivative contracts on the National Stock Exchange on Thursday.

The broader 50-share NSE index fell 1 percent to 4,839.60 points.

"The short rollover for the next month happened at a higher cost, so the market has again started giving up their gain.
Foreign funds have sold nearly $1.85 billion of local shares so far in August after purchasing $1.7 billion of equities in July.

Technology shares fell 2.07 percent, as positive comments from the sector leaders failed to negate concerns of a slowdown in corporate IT spending, if economic uncertainties persist in the United States and Europe, which account for more than 70 percent of the industry's revenue.

Brokerage UBS on Thursday lowered its earning per share estimates for large-cap Indian IT companies for fiscal year 2013 to 2016 citing a likely structural de-rating in the sector on increasing competition, slowing deal flows and falling valuations.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) , India's top software firm, fell 1.27 percent, while No. 2 player Infosys shed 3 percent. Financial stocks also took a beating, with the banking index shedding 1.4 percent, as concerns of loan defaults and asset quality continued amid rising interest rates and stubborn inflation.

Top lender State Bank of India fell 1.51 percent, while smaller rivals ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank dropped 0.99 percent and 1.88 percent, respectively. Energy major Reliance Industries , which has the biggest weightage on the benchmark index, closed 1.02 percent lower at Rs 753.50.

There was no near-term positive catalyst for the oversold market, analysts said.

Indian automakers closed down 0.18 percent, after bucking the general market trend for most of the session, with Mahindra & Mahindra , India's largest utility vehicles maker, closing almost flat, and Bajaj Auto Ltd rising marginally.

Car sales in India fell 15.8 percent in July, the first drop in two-and-half years, but sales may improve in the festive season that starts in September and peaks in early November, when new purchases are considered auspicious.

In the broader market, almost 2 stocks declined for every single advance on an overall volume of 738.7 million shares.

Last week, the index logged its fourth straight weekly loss, its longest such streak since Lehman Brothers' collapse in September 2008.

European shares were higher on Thursday, extending a rally into a fourth day as speculation grew Bernanke would announce stimulus measures and also as sentiments improved on corporate results that beat forecasts.
Tata Power , part of the diversified Tata group, rose 0.73 percent after its chairman Ratan Tata said the company is looking for power projects outside the country to sustain its growth.

State-run Union Bank of India (UBI) rose 0.62 percent after sources told Reuters the lender has mandated six banks for a possible offshore bond issue.

Tata Motors Ltd rose 1.93 percent after a newspaper reported the vehicle maker's partnership with Fiat Motors would continue.

MARKET ENDED 24.08.2011 WEDNESDAY

 WERE TODAY'S GAINERS

SENSEX            16284.98        -213.49
NIFTY               4888.90         -60.00
NASDAQ            2435.71         -10.35
UPDATEDTIME 09.28 PM  24 AUGUST 2011
BSE benchmark Sensex today tumbled by over 213 points due to across-the-board selling, mainly in interest rate sensitive stocks, following weak Asian markets which fell after Moody's downgraded Japan's sovereign debt rating.

The 30-share index initially touched a high of 16,533.22 but reacted downwards on sluggish Asian trends and remained in the negative rest of the day to settle at 16,284.98 points, showing a fall of 213.49 points, or 1.29 per cent.

In last two straight sessions, it had gained 356.80 points, or 2.21 per cent.

Besides interest-rate related shares, metal and capital goods, IT counters suffered a heavy setback on selling ahead of the expiry of August contract tomorrow.

Moody's Investors Service's downgraded Japan's sovereign debt rating by one notch to AA3 from AA2 with a stable outlook, which provoked investors to book profits.

The 50-issue Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also dipped by 60 points or 1.21 per cent to 4,888.90 points.

Profit-booking in the current uncertain scenario and ahead of the expiry of the derivatives contract tomorrow also weighed on the market sentiment, brokers said.

Selling in heavyweights like SBI, L&T, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, Tata Motors, Infosys Tech, Coal India, TCS and RIL mainly contributed to the Sensex fall, they said.

Interest rates related auto, banking and realty stocks bore the brunt of selling on concerns over the higher interest rates, they added.

Market is likely to be volatile tomorrow as it will be the last day of the August series derivatives expiry session, analysts said.

Sensex declined led by metal, auto and banking stocks. The sentiment has dampened after Moody's downgraded Japan's credit rating by one notch and domestic political instability which was major setback on policy implementation.

Investors seemed cautious as political turmoil continued for the present government. Even a positive opening in European markets was unable to change the sentiments.

Foreign Institutional Investors pulled out Rs 100.34 crore yesterday from equities, as per provisional data.

Among the Sensex stocks, Coal India fell the most by 4.61 per cent to Rs 373.85 on profit booking. The country's largest lender SBI fell by 3.53 per cent to Rs 1,992.15, while leading private lender ICICI Bank by 1.20 per cent to Rs 841.80.

Engineering major Larsen & Toubro fell by 2.17 per cent to Rs 1,557.90 and Tata Steel by 4.28 per cent to Rs 455.40.

Among IT stocks, which had seen sharp rally recently, TCS dropped by 1.71 per cent to Rs 962.75 and Infosys by 1.06 per cent to Rs 2,249.95.
Wipro fell 1.05 per cent to Rs 329.65.

Auto major Tata Motors fell by 3.90 per cent to Rs 700.70 while car major Maruti by 3.69 per cent Rs 1,115.15 on BSE.

All the 13 sectoral indices closed with losses. The BSE-Auto dipped by 2.31 per cent, BSE-Metal by 2.26 per cent, Bankex by 1.64 per cent, BSE-CG by 1.42 per cent, BSE-PSU by 1.40 per cent and BSE-IT by 1.20 per cent.

The total market breadth at BSE turned negative as 1,528 stocks ended in the red while 1,313 that finished in the green. Total turnover was slightly low at Rs 2,204.92 crore from Rs 2,247.03 crore yesterday.
