MARKET ENDED 14.02.2010 MONDAY

SENSEX 18220.20 +473.59

NIFTY 5456.00 +146.00

INR-USD 46.79 -00.14

UPDATEDTIME 09.28 PM 14 FEB 2011

The BSE benchmark Sensex today surged over 473 points to 18,202.20, biggest single day gain in nine months, as easing inflation and end of turmoil in Egypt encouraged investors to buy fundamentally sound stocks that were recently beaten down on poor sentiment.

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index Sensex, which dipped to 7-month low in the previous few days, bounced back for the second session by surging 473.59 points to 18,202.20, after touching the day's high of 18,227.62.

Sensex has lost 14 per cent from the record level on November 5, as high inflation and increasing central bank rates pushed up borrowing costs for industry as well as the consumer.

The broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty zoomed up 146 points to 5,456 and touched intra-day high of 5,463.80.

The gauge recorded a biggest single session rise after May 10, as Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned, easing concern about high oil prices that stoke overall inflation.

Meanwhile, inflation declined marginally to 8.23 per cent in January from 8.43 per cent in the previous month, as prices of certain commodities like wheat, pulses and sugar eased, although essential items like onion and other vegetables remained costly.

Brokers said the market was in the over-sold mode and the current rise forced speculators to square up their pending long positions. They said easing tension in the Middle-East also kept the global markets higher.

The Asian stocks advanced, rebounding from the biggest weekly decline since August, after Japan's economy shrank less than estimated. European markets also opened higher.

The rally was supported by stocks of Tata Motors , Hero Honda, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Auto , BHEL, Larsen and Toubro, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services , State Bank of India , HDFC Bank , ICICI Bank , Tata Steel and Tata Power.

The capital goods, auto and metal sector stocks remained on the fore-front on expectations that easing inflation would bolster growth and raise demand for the infrastructure.

The most-heaviest on the Sensex, Reliance Industries rose Rs 4.60 to Rs 915.20 and second heaviest Infosys Technologies by Rs 63.95 to Rs 3,104.55. The two carry nearly 23 per cent weightage on the index.

As the buying activity spilled over a wide-front, smallcap sector index rose by 3.94 per cent to 8,116.62 and midcap index by 3.52 per cent to 6,703.82.

WERE TODAY'S GAINERS

MARKET ENDED 03.02.2010 THURSDAY

SENSEX 18449.31 +358.68

Equities ended comfortable above intermediate resistance levels on the back of strong short covering rally. Rising food inflation and weak European markets were discounted by traders. According to experts the market may continue to rally for next few sessions and then turn rangebound ahead of budget.

Indices had a sluggish in absence of cues from Asian peers which were shut on account of the Lunar New Year. However, the bulls came back in action and helped take the indices to higher levels.

Market ignored food inflation which soared to 17.05 per cent for the week ended January 22, up 1.48 per cent, from 15.57 per cent in the previous week.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 18449.31, up 358.69 points or 1.98 per cent. The 30-share index touched a low of 18064.61 and high of 18466.21 in trade so far.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 5526.75, up 94.75 points or 1.74 per cent. The 50-share index touched a low of 5418 and high of 5532.65 in trade so far.
The rally was on expected lines but the important this is whether it manages to hold gains in tomorrow’s trade. This rally can continue upto 5650-5700 levels where supply may come in. People are cautious due to tight liquidity as foreign instititutional investors are expected to withdraw funds for at least next 2-3 months.

We are not expecting a pre-budget rally. However, post budget we may see some umove in the market.

BSE Midcap Index was up 1.09 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index gained 1.21 per cent.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index moved 3.93 per cent higher, BSE Capital Goods Index rose 2.51 per cent and BSE Metal Index gained 2.19 per cent.

DLF (7.42%), Jaiprakash Associates (6.06%), Bharti Airtel (5.12%), Hindalco (4.62%) and Tata Motors (4.08%) were the top Sensex gainers.

Bajaj Auto (-0.51%) was the only loser.

Market breadth was positive on the BSE with 1763 gainers against 1037 losers.
