MARKET ENDED 04.05.2012 FRIDAY

 WERE TODAY'S INDEX GAINERS

     SENSEX            16831.08              -320.11
     NIFTY               5086.85               -101.55
     USD/INR            0053.79                +00.35
     NASDAQ            2965.47                -58.83
UPDATEDTIME 09.28 PM  04 MAY  2012

The Nifty underperformed global peers and closed below the important support levels as GAAR and tax concerns, a weak rupee, the government's inaction toward reforms and the uncertainty in global markets hurt sentiment. All major sectoral indices, barring the pharmaceutical sector, ended in the red with capital goods, banks, metals and realty stocks leading the decline.

The indices opened in the red, taking cues from weak Asian peers and a depreciating rupee. The rupee has been on the decline for the past few sessions in the absence of foreign inflows and demand from oil importers in the wake of consistently high international crude oil prices.

The partially convertible rupee was trading at 53.71, down 30 paise, against its previous close of 53.41. It breached the resistance of 53.50 per dollar and threatened to slip below 54 per dollar in early trade touching an intraday low of 53.92. Analysts say the rupee can slip to 55-56 if the government doesn't take adequate measures.

Foreign institutional investors have been exiting Indian markets over the lack of clarity on GAAR and new tax provisions announced during the Union Budget in March. The Street is hoping to get some clarity on these issues next week when the Finance Bill is passed in Parliament.

Meanwhile, comments from S.S. Palanimanickam, the Minister of State for Finance, in the afternoon that India was considering a review of the Double Taxation Avoidance Treaty with Mauritius to raise revenues led to panic selling in the market.

Traders were also wary of carrying open positions ahead of the weekend due to the uncertainty in the global markets. The US jobs data will be out today and there are elections in eurozone nations over the weekend.

The Nifty closed at 5,086.85, down 101.55 points, or 1.96 percent. It touched an intraday high of 5,177.20 and a low of 5,070.60.

The Sensex ended at 16,831.08, down 320.11 points, or 1.87 percent. It touched an intraday high of 17,121.37 and a low of 16,776.72.

The Nifty broke the 200 daily SMA at 5117 levels in its third attempt. The first two attempts on the average resulted in a pull-back of 3-4 percent. These pull-backs resulted in formations of lower highs on the index, a pattern which is a bearish setup in technical terms.

We are near the psychological level of 5,000 where the index can stall for some time but the trend has weakened and further lows to 4,950 cannot be ruled out. The next major support is at 5,080 and 4,950 levels which are Fibonacci retracement levels.
Going ahead, 5,200 will act as resistance for the index and additional shorts can be initiated if Nifty reaches this level.

The BSE Midcap Index fell 2.15 percent and the BSE Smallcap Index was down 1.81 percent.

Among sectoral indices, the BSE Capital Goods Index was down 3.74 percent, the BSE Bankex declined 3.17 percent, the BSE Metal Index was 2.51 percent lower and the BSE Realty Index slipped 2.46 percent. The BSE Healthcare Index was up 0.24 percent.

Bank of Baroda (6.23%), Punjab National Bank (5.07%), BHEL (5.04%), Axis Bank (4.75%) and State Bank of India (4.66%) were among the top Nifty losers.

Cipla (2.93%), Sun Pharma (0.83%), Wipro (0.64%), Asian Paints (0.42%) and Tata Motors (0.35%) were among the index gainers.

Bank of Baroda reported a standalone net profit of Rs 1,518.18 crore for the quarter ended March 2012 against Rs 1,294.35 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago. Interest earned rose to Rs 8,118.52 crore for the quarter from Rs 6,334.16 crore in the same period last fiscal.

Cipla cut prices of key cancer drugs by nearly 75%, an astounding, one-shot reduction that is certain to unsettle the industry and trigger a price war. Meanwhile, CLSA upgraded it to outperform while maintaining a target price of Rs 360 on the stock.

The market breadth was negative on the NSE with 229 gainers against 1086 losers.

MARKET ENDED 03.05.2012 THURSDAY

 WERE TODAY'S INDEX GAINERS

     SENSEX            17151.19               -150.72
     NIFTY               5188.40                -50.75
     USD/INR            0053.01                +00.51
     NASDAQ            3036.52                -23.33
UPDATEDTIME 09.28 PM  03 MAY  2012

The Nifty closed below the intermediate support level of 5,200 as a weak rupee and lack of conviction among investors hurt sentiment.

The benchmark has drifted closer to the lower end of the trading range of 5,180-5,300 as foreign institutional investors await clarity on GAAR, a proposed retrospective taxation of cross-border transactions and a reduction in fuel subsidies. The Finance Bill will be debated in Parliament early next week.

"The market is looking forward to several policy initiatives and a lot of clarifications on various policy matters. If these things do happen, then it is quite possible that the stickiness that we are witnessing in the market would go away.

Apart from taxation issues, the rupee's depreciation has been worrying FIIs. "The value of international investors' holdings in the Indian market eroded by $9 billion in the past month when the rupee slid 4% against the US dollar.A further correction in the rupee may force investors to pull out from Indian equities to stem losses.

The rupee slipped below 53 per dollar, a new four-month low, on increased demand for the greenback from importers and foreign banks. The rupee was at 53.44 per dollar, down 48 paise, against its previous close of 52.96 per dollar.

On the rupee front, we all know the current account deficit and the trade deficit problem. Even seasonality is bad during this period of the year and we need FII flows, but FII flows have dried up over the past month. So that is putting the rupee under pressure.

The Nifty ended at 5,188.40, down 50.75 points, or 0.97 percent. It touched an intraday high of 5,217.30 and a low of 5,180.65.

The Sensex closed at 17,151.19, down 150.72 points, or 0.87 percent. It touched an intraday high of 17,271.77 and a low of 17,120.86.

5280-5300 was the likely top for this pullback rally and the rally seems to be over. Now that we are trading below 5,200 for the spot Nifty, it is a bad sign. The USD also gained in today's trade. This shows foreigners are not taking kindly to this market movements.

Chances are that they are selling and if the Nifty were to fall below 5,130 (200-DMA), you will see panic. We are probably headed for the 5,000 levels.

The BSE Midcap Index fell 1.02 percent and the BSE Smallcap Index declined 1 percent.

Among sectoral indices, the BSE Auto Index was down 2.43 percent, the BSE Metal Index declined 1.75 percent and the BSE Bankex was 1.74 percent lower. The BSE IT Index was up 0.71 percent.

Banks witnessed selling pressure following the Reserve Bank of India's directive to set aside more capital to meet the BASEL III requirements.

Our analysis shows that the Basel-III norms will not be impacting private bank ROEs as much as the public sector banks. Within the public sector banks also, there is a category of banks which will be little more impacted because of the current capital structure than others.

We continue to remain pretty positive on the private sector banks. We are extremely selective in case of PSUs.

Hero MotoCorp (7.55%), Axis Bank (3.94%), Bank of Baroda (3.39%), Maruti Suzuki (3.24%) and IDFC (2.89%) were among the top Nifty losers.

Hero MotoCorp posted a 20% increase in net profit to Rs 603 crore in the quarter ended March, narrowlymissing analysts' estimates, as higher raw material costs damped gains from record sales of bikes and scooters. Its total turnover (net sales and other income) in the fourth quarter rose 12% to Rs 6,035 crore driven by higher volume growth as sales jumped 8% to 15.72 lakh units. The company announced a dividend of Rs 45 per share.

Hero MotoCorp results were largely in line with estimates, but net profit came in 4% below estimates due to a higher tax rate, said a CLSA report.

The announcement of Rs 45/share dividend will come as a disappointment given expectations were of Rs 80 plus and it could take a toll on Hero's premium multiples.

Asian Paints (2.37%), Hindustan Unilever (2.32%), Wipro (2.05%), BPCL (0.94%) and TCS (0.74%) were the among the index gainers.

Shares of sugar companies surged higher in a weak market as sentiment turned bullish on the sector after the government removed the cap on sugar exports and placed the commodity under the open general licence category like wheat and rice.

The market breadth was negative on the NSE with 429 gainers against 1,047 losers.

MARKET ENDED 02.05.2012 WEDNESDAY

 WERE TODAY'S NIFTY GAINERS

     SENSEX            17301.91               -16.90
     NIFTY               5239.15                -09.00
     USD/INR            0053.01                +00.05
     NASDAQ            3046.62                -03.82
UPDATEDTIME 09.28 PM  02 MAY  2012

The Nifty snapped a three-day upmove and closed in the negative terrain as a weak rupee and lack of conviction among investors hurt sentiment.

The rupee closed near the 53-per-dollar mark on demand for the greenback from importers. Widening current account deficit, slowing domestic economic growth and exit of foreign institutional investors on concerns of tax policies have been putting pressure on the rupee.

India's exports in March fell for the first time since the 2009 global financial crisis. They fell 5.7 percent to $28.7 billion in March 2012 while imports rose 24.3 percent to $42.6 billion.

Considering factors like the significantly large trade deficit as well as the current account deficit and continuing significantly large gold imports, the currency will remain under pressure.

The partially convertible rupee ended at 52.95 per dollar, down 22 paise, against a previous close of 52.73. It slipped to a low of Rs 53.02 per dollar earlier in the day.

A large part of the market will not be very surprised if it heads to 55. With significant current account deficit etc. some amount of depreciation is to be expected.

The market had opened on a positive note taking cues from Asian peers, but failed to hold above intermediate resistance levels and gave away gains as the session progressed. The Nifty has been moving in the range of 5,200-5,300 for the past few sessions. It has been lacking strength to break out on the either side.

Once the issues on GAAR and tax policies are clarified by the government, the market may break out on the upside, analysts said.

There are a lot of headwinds because of the non-implementation of policy issues. At the same time, nasty provisions like GAAR have certainly affected the confidence of the people and took away many from directly participating in the market.

The GAAR issue would probably be resolved before the finance bill is implemented. A clarification should help people stay back in India and not withdraw money which would ultimately bring down the pressure on rupee as well.

This could possibly be seen as good news going forward. So I am relatively more confident that the market could possibly have an upmove vis-a-vis the sluggish or the downward movement that we have seen in recent times.

The Sensex ended at 17,301.91, down 16.90 points, or 0.10 percent. It touched an intraday high of 17,432.33 and a low of 17,265.48.

The Nifty closed at 5,239.15, down 9 points, or 0.17 percent. It touched an intraday high of 5,279.60 and a low of 5,226.45.

The BSE Midcap Index was down 0.27 percent while the BSE Smallcap Index edged 0.20 percent higher.
